Reggie Fils-Aime Doesn’t See Xbox or PlayStation As a Nintendo Competitor

It is clear that Nintendo likes to do things their own way and refuses to follow many trends in the video game industry. This is why you will not be surprised to learn that one of its executives does not believe that brands like PlayStation or Xbox are their real competitors.

We say this because, in a recent presentation on Geekwire (via ArsTechnica), Reggie Fils-Aime was questioned directly about whether it sees Sony and Microsoft as competitors. His answer was short and precise: “I don’t”.

But, what is the reason why he does not see Xbox and PlayStation as Nintendo’s competition? According to Fils-Aime, this is because they believe that they are actually fighting against other products, such as movies or content over the Internet: “all of the rest of that time is entertainment time. That’s what I compete for, minute by minute. That time you spend surfing the Web, watching a movie, watching a telecast of a conference: that’s all entertainment time we’re competing for. My competitive set is much bigger than my direct competitors in Sony and Microsoft. I compete for time. When I do that, I have to be creative and innovative in order to win that battle.”

Later, Reggie Fils-Aime made it clear that they see themselves as an entertainment company and not just as a video game company. This is because they have plans to use its intellectual property in different ways, such as the amusement park that they will do with Universal and the movie of Super Mario Bros. in which Illumination Entertainment is working.
