Square Enix announced a restructuring linked to the objectives and focus of Luminous Productions, a studio inaugurated last March and led by Hajime Tabata. This division of the publisher will now focus on “large-scale, high-quality AAA game titles, which best leverages the Subsidiary’s strengths.”
The restructuring of Luminous Productions has required time, energy and capital, which is why Square-Enix announced a loss of 3.7 million yen (about 31 million euros) during the last six months ended on September 30, 2018.
“Having conducted an in-depth review of the business strategy for Luminous Productions Co., Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary (the “Subsidiary”), the Company had decided to focus the Subsidiary’s development efforts on large-scale, high-quality AAA game titles, which best leverages the Subsidiary’s strengths.
This decision has resulted in the booking of an extraordinary loss amounting to 3,733 million yen, including the disposition of the portion of the content production account related to the game titles under development at the Subsidiary and impairment losses on intangible assets, in the Company’s financial results for the six-month period ended September 30, 2018,” can be read in the statements.
At the moment the first project of Luminous Productions has not been announced, the studio directed by Hajime Tabata (Final Fantasy Type-0, Final Fantasy XV) has created some interactive short films for Japanese TV and has experimented with some technologies related to animation, the new focus will see the team engaged in high-end games, so we can expect more details in the near future.
