Many people think that the great success of Nintendo Switch has not in any way affected the sales of PlayStation 4, as the two platforms are aimed at a different audience. However, Kazuhiko Takeda, Head of Planning of Sony Japan, does not seem to see it, and he expressed his opinion on this in a recent interview.
Interviewed by Nikkei, Takeda informed the following: “At our gaming business, sales of the PlayStation 4 are strong heading into the holidays. But we can’t ignore the Nintendo Switch, which has also captured consumers’ attention. Our business model involves selling both the game console and the software for it, so we’re working to get more customers paying continuously for content, for example through paid subscription services.”
Sony cannot fail to notice it, even if PS4 is doing very well with regards to sales. PlayStation 4 is still the most sold console of this generation, but it must definitely look to the future.
Sony has “woken up” and realized that Nintendo Switch could pose a threat as it has truly captured the attention of millions of gamers all over the world.
It is clear that Sony has recognized Nintendo Switch as a legitimate competitor in the market. Sony wants to keep players in its ecosystem, this will be increasingly difficult in the future because of a new and strong player in the field. 2018 will be an important year for both companies.
