NPD Analyst: Red Dead Redemption 2 and Nintendo Switch 2018’s Best Sellers

Mat Piscatella, one of the leading NPD analysts, talked about the American hardware and software market, making a prediction on the console and the game that will dominate 2018 in terms of sales.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 and Nintendo Switch will be the “best sellers” of 2018, while Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will reach new sales records: here are the predictions related to the US video gaming market disclosed by Mat Piscatella, an analyst at NPD Group.

According to the recent report, the two main titles that will compete for the top spot in the 2018 best-selling games will be Red Dead Redemption 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. The adventure set in the Far West of Rockstar’s house, for Piscatella, will be the winner with sales exceeding any title released during the year. The Activision shooter will then have to settle for second place followed by Battlefield V, NBA 2K19 and Far Cry 5 that will close the Top Five of Best Sellers of 2018.

Also in the hardware field, the analyst of NPD Group does not seem to have any kind of doubt: according to his predictions, the best-selling console will be Nintendo Switch whose sales will be driven by Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu, Let’s Go Eevee! and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

PlayStation 4 and Xbox One instead could register new records, exceeding the installed base of previous consoles. It is estimated that the current Sony and Microsoft platforms will exceed, in terms of units placed, PS2 and Xbox of 6% and PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 of 30%.

Overall, at the end of 2018, the total sales of the US hardware market should exceed 17.5 million units, registering a new record since 2012. PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch will place at least 4 million units each and sales of headsets and gamepad will be a surge. Piscatella foresees an exceptional year also for the gaming sector with the physical market which will register a +15% and digital +8% compared to what was seen in 2017.
