NPD: Red Dead Redemption 2 Was The Best-Selling Game of 2018 in the United States

Since Red Dead Redemption 2 was announced, many expected it to become a commercial success. Once debuted, they only had to spend a few hours to see that the prediction came true and in fact exceeded many expectations. This is why perhaps only a few will be surprised to learn that it was crowned as the best-selling game of 2018 in the United States.

In its most recent report, NPD Group, a firm that investigates several markets, revealed that Red Dead Redemption 2 managed to position itself as the best-selling game of 2018. With this it surpassed important releases such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Another interesting detail is that in the report, NPD Group mentions that the video game industry in the United States generated $43.3 billion during 2018. This makes it a record year and represents an annual growth of 17%. An important detail is that of this amount $35.9 billion correspond to hardware sales.

“Whether it was playing on the go on a mobile device or at home on a PC or console, consumers of all ages and interests found compelling content that delighted in 2018,” said Mat Piscatella, NPD Group analyst at a statement that he sent to Games Beat. “Console, PC, and, mobile platforms all saw significant growth, while developing portions of the market like subscription and streaming services gave us a peek into a future full of possibilities for the industry and gamers.”

On the other hand, NPD Group also shared its sales report for December 2018. In it, we learned that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was a sales success and the most popular of the month. As you imagine, following in the footsteps are Red Dead Redemption 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.
