During a talk with GamingBolt, Wedbush analyst said that Microsoft should adjust the price of Project Scorpio according to the updated Sony system, the PlayStation 4 Pro, as this will cost $399 USD.
“Well, I think Microsoft would commit suicide if it was more than $399” he said. “And the problem they will face is if they launched it at $399, the PS4 Pro might discount to $349 in the same week. So I’d be really surprised if the Scorpio was more than $399.”
To illustrate this situation, Pachter gave a glimpse into the past, when Microsoft released the first Xbox One with Kinect for a price of $499 USD, which did not bring much popularity to the console, seeing the need to abandon Kinect to reduce the price.
“I was really surprised when the Xbox One launched at $499 with Kinect, and it took them a while to unbundle Kinect and drop the price,” he continued. “So Microsoft has not executed well this cycle as far as pricing goes. Just as Sony executed poorly with the PS3’s pricing. So Microsoft’s playing catchup, and I’m hopeful that they don’t make the same mistake with Scorpio that they did with the Xbox One.”
Although for now the details of Project Scorpio are minimal, we know that the system will be a premium product that will not be cheap. In late September, the head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, said that “the console will not be as expensive as any other system that has already been heard in the video game industry before.” If you recall, one of the most expensive systems in the time was the PS3, because it was priced at $599 USD, but we’re not sure if Spencer was referring to this console.
As a result, it is difficult to believe that Project Scorpio will be cheaper than the PlayStation 4 Pro, it is known that both consoles are different in regard to power. However, all is speculation at this point, so we will wait for official information for 2017.
