Outlast Series Sells 15 Million Units, Devs Planning “A Departure” for Next Title

The series has sold more than 15 million copies.

Outlast 2

The first 2 titles of Outlast have been terrifying experiences that have kept the players hooked. However, a very important element of horror is in surprise, which is why we believe that many will be happy to know that Red Barrels wants to do something different for their next adventure.

In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Philippe Morin, the co-founder of the Canadian studio, revealed that after the release of Outlast 2 they were ready to make another franchise. However, Outlast is a series that has generated more than $64 million in profits thanks to more than 15 million copies sold, so its success was impossible to ignore.

After a time of rest and reflection, the members of Red Barrels found a balance that allowed them to continue working in Outlast but to do it with something fresh. So, they believe that the next installment of this series will be something that will satisfy the fans and that they will create with passion.

“It’s an internal struggle. On the one side you have to stay motivated as a developer, but at the same time, we have to think about stuff as company owners. That’s why it took us several months to find the sweet-spot between doing something that’s going to please the fans and something that we’re driven by personally. In big studios, they can say, ‘If you’re burnt out we can always give the IP to a different team’. But that’s not the case here,” he said.

Later, Morin said that the project is just in a prototype stage, so it seems that there is still time for us to prove it: “We’re prototyping, and the way I want to approach this is to get a prototype that we’re really happy about, and then figure out the best way to get it done.”

Outlast and Outlast 2 are available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. What do you think about this news? Which direction would you like the next title of Outlast to have? Tell us in the comments below.
