Microsoft refuses to confirm whether Project Scorpio will have Blu-ray 4K
One of the topics of discussion in recent weeks has been the decision of Sony not implementing a Blu-ray 4K on the PlayStation 4 Pro. For this reason, Microsoft has been asked several times if Project Scorpio will have the technology but the company is not ready to share that information.
The good news for those who prefer to have their films in physical format is that Microsoft believes that digital media distribution are not everything. In a chat with Eurogamer, Albert Penello, director of planning for Xbox, said that’s one of the reasons which included a Blu-ray 4K on the Xbox One S and left open the possibility that Project Scorpio will also count with one.
“We haven’t announced anything specifically on that [4K Blu-ray player in Project Scorpio]. You could assume that would be our intent, but we don’t have anything specific on that. Microsoft’s point of view on this is, the story is told in the product we’re shipping. We had to make those decisions long ago. So it’s funny how much people think we act or react to what Sony’s doing. But this decision was locked a long time ago,” Penello said.
On the other hand, Penello said that another reason why Microsoft included this type of blu-ray player for the Xbox One S is because they really believe in 4K.
“We don’t sign up for every media format change. There has been a lot of SmartTV stuff and 3D, and they didn’t really set the world on fire. I really believe in 4K and HDR. I have one myself. I thought I was going to regret it. I think it’s as meaningful an upgrade as it was going from SD to HD, when you start seeing the native 4K content. And so we were just really bullish on it,” said Penello.

As you know, Andrew House, president of PlayStation, explained that the new console will not include a DVD Blu-ray 4K because they believe that streaming video is the future. For this reason, the PlayStation 4 Pro will feature new applications like Netflix and YouTube, which plays content in 4K.
What do you think? For you it is important that a console includes a Blu-ray 4K player or not interested in physical format of films? Tell us in the comments.
In related information, Penello noted that the power of the PlayStation 4 Pro “is not enough to do true 4K”. On the other hand, a Microsoft executive confirmed that Project Scorpio itself may render pictures to this resolution.
Project Scorpio is expected to arrive before the end of 2017.
