Gabe Newell hints about Left 4 Dead 3 and Half-Life 3 on Reddit AMA

Gabe Newell performed an Ask Me Anything on Reddit, where he was questioned about the future of Left 4 Dead. Given this situation, the president of Valve explained the importance of the franchise, and although he did not commit to launch a new game, but still left the door open.

To begin, Newell mentioned that Valve’s philosophy for creating games is related to technology, gameplay innovation and the interest of people to work on the project.

“Products are usually the result of an intersection of technology that we think has traction, a group of people who want to work on that, and one of the game properties that feels like a natural playground for that set of technology and design challenges,” Newell said.

He also explained that the market to which the product is directed is also important, because it will be the players who give life to the game; as an example he mentioned Team Fortress.

“WWhen we decided we needed to work on markets, free to play, and user generated content, Team Fortress seemed like the right place to do that,” he continued. “That work ended up informing everything we did in the multiplayer space.”

Where does Left 4 Dead fits in all this? For Newell the franchise “is a good place for creating shared narratives.” As fans know, the most important aspect of Left 4 Dead is to survive this world next to your peers, but at the same time, the scenarios narrate the events that preceded the main story.

Thus, although there is no clear future for the franchise, Valve still believe in Left 4 Dead as a game that should encourage fellowship and narrative, which will surely give relief to fans of the series. The bad news is that we have been 7 years without a continuation, and there are only theories about a third.

During this session of questions and answers, Gabe Newell also spoke about Half-Life 3, and without revealing precise details, said Valve continues to work on single player titles, and could launch a new intellectual property that is developed in the universe of Half-life and Portal.
