At the end of last week there were rumors about a new Thief game that was in development on the web, ready to be released in conjunction with the film dedicated to the franchise. In reality, things are not exactly like that way, to deny the rumor it was the boss of Eidos Montreal, David Anfossi, with a Tweet that leaves no room for doubt.
David Anfossi of Eidos Montreal spoke on Twitter to shut down, at least temporarily, the hopes of fans to see a new chapter in the series of Thief quickly.
“Apparently we’re developing Thief 5 game! So now we have a title… We just have to build a team,a budget… Forget it!,” was the stinging response from the head of the Canadian studio. The words of Anfossi, in short, seems to be definitely clear, the time for a new Thief has not yet arrived.
The denial comes at a very special time for Square Enix, that owns the Eidos brand, which has been forced to offer for sale IO Interactive “to maximize player satisfaction as well as market potential going forward, we are focusing our resources and energies on key franchises and studios.”
All this does not categorically rule out the return of the thief Garrett, but it seems clear that it will take a while before this can happen.
The reboot of Thief did not get unfortunately the expected success, it seems unlikely that Square-Enix wants to return to invest again on this brand in the near future.
The last appearance of the stealth saga dates back to 2014, when the reboot simply titled as Thief debuted on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360.
