The sports titles of Electronic Arts are characterized by annual releases. However, with the changes in the industry, this scheme of launches could change in the future. Andrew Wilson, executive manager of the company, spoke on the subject and affirmed that online updates or subscriptions for several of its games, such as FIFA and Madden, could be offered in some years.

During an interview with Bloomberg, Wilson was questioned about whether sports titles will stop receiving annual releases. The manager said that the short answer would be yes. However, there is a long way to go before this happens.

Wilson said that every year they work hard to deliver quality titles from FIFA and Madden. However, in the future, they could stop distributing annual releases to offer an upgradeable title through a subscription service.

To illustrate this possible change in market patterns, Wilson commented: “The greatest disruptor to the consumption of entertainment media in the last five years has been the combination of streaming plus subscription. It’s changed the way we watch television. It’s changed the way we listen to music. It’s changed the way I read books.”

So, the executive believes that, sooner or later, it will be necessary to make this change in video games. “There’s a world not too far away from now where video games move from being a discrete, conscious experience to an indiscreet, subconscious experience,” Wilson added.

In related news, FIFA 18 has been a success, proof of this is that it was the most downloaded PlayStation Store game in America during October.
