After Sony agreed to integrate cross-play on PS4 for Fortnite users, fans of different games have asked some companies to work on it to enjoy gaming sessions with users from different platforms. Being one of the most important multiplayer titles of recent years, it is clear that Overwatch is also in the eye of cross-play and recently Jeff Kaplan confirmed that Blizzard is interested in that becoming a reality.

During an interview conducted by Eurogamer with Jeff Kaplan, director of Overwatch, in the framework of BlizzCon 2018, the issue related to the possible integration of cross-play for the PS4 and Xbox One versions was addressed.

In this sense, the creative acknowledged that it is something that has been thought within the development team and that has also been discussed with the representatives of Sony and Microsoft: “We’re super-excited about what’s going on with cross-play in all sorts of different games, from Rocket League to Fortnite, and we are constantly in discussions with the first-parties, Microsoft and Sony, to see where they’re at and gauge where their temperature is at. It’s something that would be very exciting for us to pursue.”

After revealing the above, Kaplan was questioned about whether the Overwatch team is considering the cross-play between PS4 and Xbox One as a serious matter and the creative acknowledged that although there are challenges that must be overcome, they want to try: “We are definitely having conversations that we’re interested in the thought of it. It’s very complicated – from a technology standpoint, a game design standpoint, and from a business relationship standpoint. But we would be excited to tackle all of those challenges; we would love to try. We’re gamers; “Why can’t my buddies on this system or that system play together?” We sympathize with that, we want to be able to do that too.”

The conclusion that we can draw from the words of Jeff Kaplan is that, at least for now, it does not seem that cross-play will be a reality that will end in the near future. However, it is a possibility that we certainly should not rule out at all.
