Asus ROG Phone Announced With Dual Charging Ports

It is finally during this Computex 2018, Asus has just announced its new smartphone for gamers. No, this is not a new Zenfone but a new Asus ROG Phone that competes with not only the Razer Phone but also the Xiaomi Black Shark.

With the advent of mobile games and especially Fortnite or PUBG Mobile, the temptation of smartphone for the Core Gamers was too strong. Also, the ROG Phone comes in the form of a particular gaming-oriented smartphone with a plastic back and an 18:9 diagonal screen of 6 inches and a Full HD+ definition of 2160 x 1080. The slab is AMOLED type with a refresh rate of 90 Hz, a response rate of 1 ms, support of the DCI-P3 color gamut at 108.6%, HDR support and you can imagine, an excellent contrast ratio.

Inside, we find the excellent SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 but boosted to 2.96GHz, an Adreno 630 GPU, Android Oreo with a ROG Gaming UI overprint, 128 GB or 512 GB of internal memory, 8 GB LPDDR4 RAM, Bluetooth 5.0, WiFi ac, a USB-C USB 3.1 compatible port, a jack, a 4000 mAh compatible Qualcomm QuickCharge 3.0 and Asus HyperCharge battery, all in a size of 158.8 x 76.2 x 8.6 mm for a weight of 200g.

Don McGuire, Vice President at Qualcomm Technologies, spoke about the long-standing partnership between ROG and Qualcomm Technologies, Qualcomm’s industry. “Qualcomm Technologies and ASUS have had great successes in recent years and we are excited to be part of the innovative ROG Phone project,” he said. “Our entirely re-architected Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform with the gaming-optimized Adreno 630 GPU is designed for speed, minimizing thermal throttling and maximizing battery efficiency so users can play longer. Snapdragon 845 is engineered to deliver an unparalleled gaming experience; supporting exceptional performance, fast and smooth graphics, and Gigabit speeds whether on LTE or 802.11ad Wi-Fi.”

On the photo side, we find the same photo block as the Zenfone 5 released recently, namely a 12-megapixel main sensor coupled to an ultra-wide angle with an 8-megapixel sensor. In front, the ROG Phone offers an 8-megapixel sensor. So, we also discover that the ROG Phone embeds stereo speakers and supports the DTS Headphone: X.

Apart from the over-boosted SoC compared to a classic Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, note the presence of sensors on the side edges, like the Edge Sense HTC U11 and more recently U12+. Without putting it forward, you can do some actions by pressing the smartphone. But the addition of such a function, it is especially the contribution of the simulation of the buttons L and R of a classic joystick on the slices of ROG Phone. Not obvious at first, we get used to it quite quickly and it is rather practical.

The technology is called AirTriggers. And finally, will be bundled with the AeroActive Cooler, an additional accessory that will help cool down, even more, the Asus ROG Phone, itself already equipped with a 3D Vapor Cooling System from the laptops of the brand. With such frequencies, it was predictable that the ROG Phone might heat up. This accessory, delivered as standard, highlights that the ROG Phone also has a USB-C port on the edge, convenient to play and recharge at the same time. Finally, note a vibration system similar to that offered by Sony’s recent Xperia XZ2.

But that’s not all. Unlike Xiaomi or Razer which only offers a gaming smartphone, Asus has made the choice to announce a complete eco-system. For example, there will be a dock that connects the ROG Phone to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. There will also be a joystick that surrounds the smartphone, made by GameVice, which offers the same thing for iOS devices, and coupled to a wireless receiver (via WiFi) to duplicate the screen of your smartphone to an external monitor. But finally, the most interesting is the TwinView Dock, an accessory incorporating a controller and an additional screen and in which you will insert the Asus ROG Phone. The result, we end up with a kind of Nintendo DS but with full HD screens and touch, top and bottom.

No price is specified yet but an exit of Asus ROG phone is scheduled for the 4th quarter of 2018.
